Greetings! I would like to welcome and thank everyone for stopping by and visiting the GateWalker’s Info Page. This is our third discussion about the Four Directional Gates. Since we have already discussed the overall attributes of each Gate, and the North Gate, in this discussion we will cover some aspects about the East Gate.

Waxing Moon
Description of the East Gate is given in the 2ndpart of the MAGAN Text entitled: Of the Generations of the Ancient Ones.
We can see from the above correspondences, that the East Gate is attributed to ANU. Interestingly, when we read the INVOCATION OF THE EAST GATE, it seems as if the Invocation is addressed to a feminine deity. Let us take a look at the INVOCATION OF THE EAST GATE, as found on page 102 in the Simon Necronomicon.
Invocation of the Eastern Gate
Thee I invoke, Mistress of the Rising Star.
Queen of Magick, of the Mountains of MASHU!
Thee I call forth this day to guard this Most Holy mandal against the Seven Ensnarers, the Seven Liers-In-Wait, the evil
Maskim, the Evil Lords!
Thee I Summon, Queen of the Eastern Ways, that thou mayest protect me from the Eye of Death, and the evil rays of the
ENDUKUGGA and NINDUKUGGA!
Be watchful, Queen of the Eastern Ways, and Remember!
Spirit of the East, Remember!”
One thing that I find fascinating when reading the above INVOCATION, is the mention of ENDUKUGGA and NINDUKUGGA. Let us take a closer look at these names. It can be easily seen that ENDUKUGGA and NINDUKUGGA possess the same root word ‘DUKUGGA, which derives from the Akkadian term Du-Kuga. Babylonian Topographical Texts by A. R. George states the following concerning the term Du-kuga on page 371:
“Du-kuga.., a cosmological location where the gods were imagined to dwell,…,”Then in the birth-place of the gods, in that house Du-kuga, they made Lahar and Asnan grow”..,Here the “birthplace” of the gods is perhaps both the place where they were created (by An, earlier in the story), and the place where they themselves create.”
From the above quote we can determine that “Du-kuga” was a creative dimension. Therefore, the names NINDUKUGGA and ENDUKUGGA, could also be translated as “Lady of the creative place” and “Lord of the creative place.” Interestingly, ENDUGKUGGA and NINDUKUGGA are often described as parental gods of the Underworld. Other sources describe these two deities as the parents of ENLIL. It seems as if these two deities were shadow-sides of two deities that were an important part of the Sumerian Pantheon, ISHTAR and ANU.
ISHTAR, eventually replaced Antu, ANU’S first wife to become the Queen of heaven. The name INANNA means “Lady of An,” or “Lady of Heaven.” Anu of course would be the creative aspect, his name being defined as the “heavenly one.” ENDUKUGGA and NINDUKUGGA are shadow-sides of ANU and ISHTAR. It seems as if Gilgamesh encountered these shadow-sides of ANU and ISHTAR, when he spurned ISHTAR, who had approached him flirtatiously in his travels. Notice what is mentioned of ISHTAR in the famous Epics of Gilgamesh:
“Anu addressed Princess Ishtar, saying: “What is the matter?
Was it not you who provoked King Gilgamesh?
So Gilgamesh recounted despicable deeds about you,
despicable deeds and curses!”
Ishtar spoke to her father, Anu, saying:
“Father, give me the Bull of Heaven,
so he can kill Gilgamesh in his dwelling.
If you do not give me the Bull of Heaven,
I will knock down the Gates of the Netherworld,
I will smash the door posts, and leave the doors flat down,
and will let the dead go up to eat the living!
And the dead will outnumber the living!”
Anu addressed princess Ishtar, saying:
“If you demand the Bull of Heaven from me,
there will be seven years of empty husks for the land of Uruk.
Have you collected grain for the people!
Have you made grasses grow for the animals?”
Ishtar addressed Anu, her father, saying:
“I have heaped grain in the granaries for the people,
I made grasses grow for the animals,
in order that they might eat in the seven years of empty husks.
I have collected grain for the people,
I have made grasses grow for the animals.”
When Anu heard her words, he placed the nose rope of the Bull of Heaven in her hand.
Ishtar led the Bull of Heaven down to the earth.
When it reached Uruk It climbed down to the Euphrates…
At the snort of the Bull of Heaven a huge pit opened up,
and 100 Young Men of Uruk fell in.”
Previously, we spoke about NINSHUBUR who served as a Watcher for both ISHTAR and ANU. NINSHUBUR is depicted as a woman when mentioned in several epics concerning a ISHTAR and depicted as a man when serving ANU. We can see how similar the spirits of ISHTAR and ANU were since they had the same Watcher. ANU is a creative force and ISHTAR represented the channel of how that energy of ANU is channeled into the world. Another aspect of the East Gate is that it is the birthplace of the star and Sun as, when viewed from Earth that appears to rise from the Eastern. This also brings into effect another biological process that occurs in the body. Our bodies are made to enjoy the daylight hours and rest during the shadow hours of the night. It could be very possible that Du-kuga from that we have discussed that represented the shadow-side of the creative and tantric aspects the stars that rise in the East and their affect on the pineal gland.
Within the body is a gland called the pineal gland. It controls some of the internal clocks which are affected by the movement or journey of the Sun. As the daylight hours shorten, the pineal gland releases the chemical melatonin; this in turn controls the amount of serotonin in the brain. The pineal gland is sensitive to, and reacts to, the amount of light. The body experiences changes in energy levels in reaction to changes in daylight hours. Many people experience an increase in energy as the sun moves through the spring and summer pathways, but find that the energy drops with the decrease in daylight hours during the autumn and winter.
Additionally, the INVOCATION OF THE EAST GATE mentions protection against “the Seven Ensnarers, the Seven Liers-In-Wait, the evil
Maskim, the Evil Lords!” These Seven Liers-In-Wait refer to a star constellation. We have to remember that the East Gate also represents the springtime. Around the time of 4,000 B.C.E. spring was ushered in during the sign of Taurus. Today, Taurus stands as the fixed sign for the spring season. Taurus is also ruled by ISHTAR (Venus). The Seven Liers-In-Wait refer to Pleiades Constellation. Notice what is stated by Wikipedia concerning the Pleiades:
“The Pleiades (pronounced /ˈpliːədiːz/ or /ˈplaɪədiːz/), also known as M45, the Seven Sisters, Seven Stars, SED, Matariki (New Zealand Maori), Subaru (Japan), or Bitang Skora (Borneo Bidayuh) is an open cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters, and is probably the best known, and is certainly the most obvious to the naked eye”
