UNDERSTANDING THE FOUR DIRECTIONAL GATES PART 2: THE NORTH GATE

Greetings! I would like to welcome and thank everyone for stopping by and visiting us here at the GateWalker’s Information Page. This is our second discussion concerning the Four Directional Gates in the Simon Necronomicon. Since we laid down an overall description of the Four Directional Gates in the first part of our discussion, let us now begin to delve a little deeper into this subject by examining each Gate. The first Gate we will discuss is the North Gate.

In the INVOCATION OF THE NORH GATE it mentions that the Silver Hunter from the City of UR is being called. Ur was known in ancient times as the principal city in the Land of the Watchers.

Many people who work with the Simon Necronomicon have often wondered about the correlations between the Necronomicon Tradition and Enochian Magic. The greatest correlation can be seen within the workings of the Four Directional Gates. However, the understanding of the Four Directional Gates is held in older traditions than those found in the works of John Dee.

The Everything Freemasons Book by John K. Young, Barb Karg has this to say concerning the North Direction, which is our subject at hand:

“The north in Freemasonry is a place of darkness. In ancient masonry, the north marked the spot where the foundation stone of a new building was laid. Symbolically, those in the north are as yet uninitiated. The northeast direction, where the cornerstone is laid is crucial to a building and to a newly initiated Apprentice who is said to symbolically be in the most superficial area of the Craft.”

The above quote makes an interesting observation concerning the direction North. The direction North, in many mystical and magical systems, is indeed a place of darkness and some even claim death. Yet we are told throughout various sections of the Simon Necronomicon to face the North direction when performing various INVOCATIONS. Let us just review a few passages in the Simon Necronomicon:

Thou must needs prepare an alter to face the North, having upon it the statues of thine deities, or some such suitable Images, an offering bowl, and a brazier. Upon the earth should be inscribed the Gate appropriate to the Walking. If above thee is the Sky, so much the better. If there be a roof above thine head, it must be free from all hangings.., The only light shall be from the four lamps upon the ground, at each of the four Gates of the Earth: of the North, one lamp; pf the East, one lamp; of the South, one lamp; and of the West, one lamp. The oil should be pure, with no odor, or else sweet-smelling..,” (Page 38)

Sixth, thou must recite the Incantation of the Walking, loudly, and in a clear voice, as thou walkest about the Gate in a circular fashion, beginning at the North and walking to the East, then to the South, and to the West, the Number of turns being equal to the special Number of the Star.” (Page 46)

And the bowl must be lain between the Circles, facing the Northeast.
And thy vestments should be black, and thy cap black.
And the Sword must be at hand, but not yet in the ground.
And it must be the Darkest Hour of the Night.
And there must be no light, save for the AGA MASS SSARATU.
And the Conjuration of the Three must be made, thus:” (Page 71)

“This Invocation is to be made during the course of any Ceremony when it is necessary to summon the Watcher to preside over the outer precincts of the Circle or Gate. The Sword is to be thrust into the ground as before, in the Northeast section, but the AGA MASS SSARATU is not necessary LEST THOU HAST NOT MADE SACRIFICE TO THINE WATCHER IN THE SPACE OF ONE MOON in which case it is necessary to sacrifice to It anew whether in that Ceremony or at some other, earlier.” (Page 72)

“The Fifty Names here follow, with their Signs and Powers. They may be summoned after the Priest has ascended to that step on the Ladder of Lights and gained entrance to that Sacred City. The Signs should be engraved on parchment or sealed in clay and placed upon the altar at the Calling. And in the perfumes should be of cedar, and strong, sweet-smelling resins. And the Calling be to the North.” (Page 124)

And there are Four Spirits of the Spaces, and they come upon the Wind, and they are Things of the Wind, and of Fire. And the First comes from the North, and is called USTUR, and has a Human Shape. And He is the Most Ancient of the Four, and a Great Lord of the World.” (Page 190)

“And a Dead God may be also summoned, and the formulae is that which follows. It must be spoken clearly aloud, and not a word changed, else the Spirit of the God may devour thee, as there is no Food and no Drink where they are…,And it must be called in a secret place, without windows, or with windows only in one place, and that should be in the Northern Wall of the place” (Page 195)

“Seven Stars of Seven Powers!
Ever-Shining Star of the North!
SIRIUS!
DRACONIS!
CAPRICORNUS!
Stand by and accept
This sacrifice I offer
May it be acceptable
To the Most Ancient Gods! (Page 199)

From the above passages, we can see that for all the important workings in the Simon Necronomicon, whether it is calling the Watcher, working with the 50 NAMES, Walking the GATES,  or the spirits in the URILLA Text, we are instructed to face the North Direction. According to the information we quoted earlier, which explained the Masonic definition of the direction North, all are workings are directed towards the place of darkness, or death (transformation). The Mad Arab in the following passages sheds some light as to why all of our workings are directed to the North:

For this is the Book of the Dead, the Book of the Black Earth, that I have writ down at the peril of my life, exactly as I received it, on the planes of the IGIGI, the cruel celestial spirits from beyond the Wanderers of the Wastes.., I have traveled beneath the Seas, in search of the Palace of Our Master, and found the stone of monuments of vanquished civilisations, and deciphered the writings of some of these; while still others remain mysteries to any man who lives. And these civilisations were destroyed because of the knowledge contained in this book.” (Taken from the Testimony of the Mad Arab)

We have explained in prior discussions that our initiation into this system is not  a part of some Christian aesthetic, where the initiate is able to join forces with the good guys to help them fight off the Ancient Ones. Quite the contray, we are indeed being initiated into the ways of Necromancy. When we research the legacy left for us by the Chaldeans, it becomes quite clear that there are ‘destructive’ forces that the Priest/Priestess must banish. However, these destructive forces are not to be confused with TIAMAT. A careful study of the Simon Necronomicon shows us that the battle between MARDUK and TIAMAT is an alchemical treaty of initiation. On page 113 of his book, Chaldean magic: Its Origin and Development, Francois Lenormant place ABSU-TIMAT at the top of the Chaldean pantheon. Here at the Necronomicon Gatewalker’s Page, in the article entitled; THE SIMON NECRONOMICON’S VERSION OF THE ENUMA ELISH, we gave a thorough description of how the battle between MARDUK and TIAMAT is completely alchemical. Interestingly, after this legendary battle appears in the MAGAN Text, we read the following words of the often described conquered Dragon:

WE ARE FROM A RACE BEYOND THE WANDERERS OF NIGHT.
We have survived the Age when ABSU ruled the Earth
And the Power destroyed out generations.
We have survived on tops of mountains
And beneath the feet of mountains
And have spoken with the Scorpions
In allegiance and were betrayed.
And TIAMAT has promised us nevermore to attack
With water and with wind.
But the Gods are forgetful.” (Taken from the Simon Necronomicon page 159)

From the above passage, which follows the description of the battle between MARDUK and TIAMAT, we see that TIAMAT is not dead at all. However, she is described as such in the text because of our lack of awareness. Battling the Dragon is a metaphor for learning how to make use of a more chaotic side of ourselves In order to effectively master the divine side of ourselves, we have to take it step by step. Thus, we find ourselves learning how to control this energy by dealing with weaker forms of its manifestation, as seen in how we work within the seven initiatory Gates These gates represent less intense aspects of the Dragon. When we reach ADAR the nature of our desire body will have awakened and we become gradually transformed in preparation of crossing the ABYSS. If we were to try and deal with these energies before our initiation within the seven initiatory Gates, it would only cause psychological harm. Just imagine if you were trying to become a good electrician like Adept Edunpanna. You must first prepare and educate yourself with electrical ideals and you must also practice with low voltage energies before dealing with high voltage energies. Thus, it is the same within the Necronomicon Tradition. In order to prevent the Initiate from hurting himself, the Necronomicon is written in a way that inspires the student to work with powerful yet weaker aspects of the Tradition. After establishing a relationship with the ‘gods’ the Initiate soon learns the deeper meanings of our Tradition Notice how this same principal is so eloquently stated by the Mad Arab in the URILLA Text, as found on pages 183 and 186:

“These incantations are said by the hidden priests and creatures of these powers, defeated by the Elders and the Seven Powers, led by MARDUK, supported by ENKI and the whole Host of IGIGI; defeaters of the Old Serpent, the Ancient Worm, TIAMAT, the ABYSS, also called KUTULU the Corpse-ENKI, yet who lies not dead, but dreaming; he whom secret priests, initiated into the Black Rites, whose names are writ forever in the Book of Chaos, can summon if they but know how….These words are not to be shown to any man, or the Curse of ENKI are upon thee!”

Later the Mad Arab states on page 186 the following:

“The terrible offspring of the Ancient Ones may be summoned by the priest. These offspring may be called and adjured to perform what tasks the priest may deem necessary in his temple. They were begotten before all ages and dwelt in the blood of KINGU, and MARDUK could not altogether shut them out. And they dwell in our country, and alongside our generations, though they may not be seen. And this was taught by the priests of Babylon, who charged that these formulae may never be revealed to anyone who is not initiated into our ways, for to do so would be the most frightful error.”

Some people think that it is only the workings written within the URILLA Text that constitute the dark arts, but this is far from the reality of the Necronomicon Tradition. The stages of initiation and what it leads up to are described in the MAGAN Text. Notice page 160:

“Know that our years are the years of War
And our days are measured as battles
And every hour is a Life
Lost to the Outside
Those from Without
Have builded up charnel houses
To nourish the fiends of TIAMAT
And the Blood of the weakest here
Is libation unto TIAMAT
Queen of the Ghouls
Wreaker of Pain
And to invoke her
The Red Water of Life
Need be split on a stone
The stone struck with
a sword
That hath slain eleven men
Sacrifices to HUBUR
So that the Strike ringeth out
And call TIAMAT from Her slumber
From her sleep in the Caverns
Of the Earth.”

The Sword that has slain eleven men, is none other than the Sword of the Watcher. The number eleven is the number of gates that the Initiate must walk in order to gain a deeper understanding of the Tradition. Notice what we find in the SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL TO 777:

Although there are seven initiatory spheres, we discussed thoroughly the importance of the 11 spheres in our previous discussions. This shows us that the higher we climb in our GateWalking Process, the closer we are to becoming the Dragon. The Red Water of life that was mentioned in the passage quoted above from the MAGAN Text, means blood. This is not actual blood but life-force or chi Before we explore this subject a little more let us first take some time to analyze the Masonic passage that we discussed earlier.

Although, Freemasonry is a very respected organization the rites of Necromancy are much more ancient. First, Freemasonry makes the claim of being a ‘Christian organization, which means that some of its perceptions of Ancient Traditions may be perceived as being heathen. Wikipedia gives us this definition of Necromancy:

Early necromancy is likely related to shamanism, which calls upon spirits such as the ghosts of ancestors. Classical necromancers addressed the dead in “a mixture of high-pitch squeaking and low droning”, comparable to the trance-state mutterings of shamans.[1]

The historian Strabo refers to necromancy as the principal form of divination amongst the people of Persia (Strabo, xvi. 2, 39, νεκρομαντία), and it is believed to also have been widespread amongst the peoples of Chaldea (particularly amongst the Sabians or star-worshipers), Etruria, and Babylonia. The Babylonian necromancers were called Manzazuu or Sha’etemmu, and the spirits they raised were called Etemmu.

Necromancy was widespread in Western antiquity with records of practice in Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.[2] The oldest literary account of necromancy is in Homer’s Odyssey (ca. 700 BCE).[3] In the Odyssey (XI, Nekyia), Odysseus under the tutelage of Circe, a powerful sorceress, makes a voyage to Hades, the Underworld, in an effort to raise the spirits of the dead using spells which Circe has instructed. [4] His intention is to invoke and ask questions of the shade of Tiresias, in order to gain insight on the impending voyage home. Alas, he is unable to summon the spirit without the assistance of others. In Homer’s passage, there are many references to specific rituals associated with necromancy; the rites must be done during nocturnal hours, and based around a pit with fire.[5] In addition, Odysseus has to follow a specific recipe, which included using sacrificial animals’ blood for ghosts to drink, while he recites prayers to both the ghosts and gods of the underworld.[6] Rituals, such as these, were common practices associated with necromancy, and varied from the mundane to the more grotesque. Rituals in necromancy involved magic circles, wands, talismans, bells, and incantations.[

The above pasage gives us a very informative look into the history of Necromancy. One thing that we can derive from all of this is that one must explore the path of Necromancy if he/she were to ever consider walking down the path of Ancient Mesopotamian Metaphysics. Please take note the classification of Necromancy as being a dark art or “black magic” is actually a label given to it by the Roman Catholic Church! Before this time necromancy was an art that all students of the Greater Mysteries of the eastern world had to learn in order to become an adept. This also explains why Simon gave the Book of the Black Earth the title Necronomicon. It was because he realized that you cannot call yourself a follower of the Ancient Gods of Mesopotamia if you reject Necromancy. Necromancy is a beautiful art that gave the world a foundation in astrology, kabala, numerology, tarot, healing, and etc. All of these things were founded by Necromancers (Dark Knights). Since our tradition as Necromancers is a rare one. It is sometimes difficult to find resources outside of our own that can help explain our Tradition. This may occur even though we have developed strong ties with our Masonic Brother. It should also be noted that information about our workings and the Qliphotic Kabbalah is extremely scarce, so at times we may have to look at some other surviving ancient traditions to see elements of our own history. Therefore, let us examine the Taoist perspective of the Direction North. Simon makes mention of some aspects of the Taoist tradition in his Gates of the Necronomicon book. However, we will use sources that may not have a prejudice to our path. One thing that we know about the direction North, although it is a place of darkeness, is that it is the keeper of the North Star.

Jasmuheen, in his famous book entitled. The Food of the Gods, makes a very interesting point on page 65:

“In the teachings of the ancient Tao, it is said that our Violet Light spectrum comes to our physical Earth through the fixed point of the North Star and that when we connect with this star we are free from the pull of the natural life/death cycles of the Earth.”

Infamous teacher in the Taoist Tradition, Mantak Chia mentions the following in his book, entitled Darkness Technology: Darkness techniques For Enlightenment, the following on page 7:

The North Star, unmoving and unwavering in space, is the center, the Wu Chi, emanating violet rays throughout the galaxy. affecting every cell of nature on our planet. The Big Dipper gathers all the violet light from the universe, and emanates the light as infra-red radiant energy…,the North Star, has a positive, nurturing effect upon the bodies and minds of those who know how to access it. Taoists believe that the Violet Stars, the Big Dipper, and other constellations form the “Gates of Heaven.”  All living things must pass through these gates to return to their source of origin, the Wu Chi, which is the state of Oneness with Tao.”

Mantak Chia is well-respected in the field of Eastern Medicine. His above comments give us an understanding of the direction North that is more ancient than modern-day Freemasonry His book can be downloaded for free at the following link:

http://universal-tao.com/dark_room/index.html

Now that we understand some of the Ancient Taoists perceptions of the direction North, which was to connect with the North Star and evolve in being and immortality, we can know get a deeper understanding of why all the rituals in the Simon Necronomicon are performed to the direction North. It is for us to connect with the North Star’s energy which leads to a gate of transformation. This raises our kundalini, or KUTULU/TIAMAT, whereby we grow to our fullest potential. This is what the Mad Arab meant when he wrote the following words, as found on page 190:

for this is when Great KUTULU moves. And he is the very Fire of the Earth, and Power of All Magick. When he joins with the Abominations of the Sky, TIAMAT will once more rule the earth!”

Notice what is also stated on page 202:

“When the Great KUTULU rises up and greets the Stars, then the War will be over, and the World be One.”

From the above quotes we can see that our rituals are performed to the direction North, not as a place of destruction, but as a way to raise our dead self by having intercourse with the ruling star of the North our connection with this Star can be seen in the INVOCATION OF THE NORTH GATE:

Thee I invoke, Silver Hunter from the Sacred City of UR!
Thee I call forth to guard this North Place of the Most Holy Mandal”

The Silver Hunter is the North Star. This also brings up another clarification of the first part of the MAGAN Text, which is sometimes called a bastardized version of the Enuma Elish. This epic is often understood to be a fight between the good guys and the bad guys. However, it is a battle between our inner-self and the energies of the North Star. We are TIAMAT in this alchemical treaty, and the North Star is battling us as we open up to its energies. This is an inverse way of looking at it, but it does clarify why it is said that man’s body goes back to the Ancient Ones.
