Greetings! I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Simon Necronomicon Gatewalker’s Info Page. Occasionally we receive questions from our readers concerning the material that has been posted. Recently, I have received a few questions about the Four Directional Gates that are invoked in the Book of Calling on pages 101 to 103.

Before we delve a little deeper into this topic, we must first understand why the four directions are invoked and what they are. Interestingly, the Mad Arab gives us some description of them on page 101 where he states the following:
“And the Four Gates invoked, being the Four Watchtowers that stand about thee and the circumference of the MANDAL and witness the Rites, and Watch the Outside, that the Ancient Ones may not trouble thee.”
The Mad Arab states that the spirits of the four directions are those who ‘Watch the Outside.’ This would indicate that these spirits are among the class of Watchers. Notice what is said of the Watcher on page 73:
“At this point, the Watcher will surely come and stand outside the Gate or Circle until such time as he is given the license..,”
We can see that both the Watcher and the Spirits of the Four Directions have the responsibility of keeping careful Watch over the Outside. This would mean that they are both of the class of Watchers since they have the same function. The practice of addressing the Four Directions is popular in various occult systems, one being Enochian Magic. Interestingly, one of the people who was responsible for the translation of the Simon Necronomicon, Peter Levenda, was said to be very skilled in Enochian Magic. This opinion of Levenda was even shared amongst his own enemies. Alan Cabal, in an article feature in the New York Press states the following about Levenda:
“He began teaching classes in the back room, and showed a genuine knack for clarifying and elucidating such baroque encrypted arcana as John Dee’s Enochian magick system in such a way as to make it understandable even to a novice.”
Since there are some similarities between the Enochian system of magic and the workings of the Simon Necronomicon, let us then explore a definition of the Four Directions from an Enochian point of view.
Wikipedia defines for us some aspect of the Enochian perspective under the subheading Watchtower. Notice what is stated:
“A Watchtower is a spirit guardian of one of the four cardinal points in both ceremonial magic and the neopagan religion of Wicca. Alternately, the Watchtowers are the abodes of the guardians. Often believed to represent the four elements, the Watchtowers are invoked during ritual to cast the magic circle. They may be pictured in the imagination or represented with tablets or other physical symbols.
In many Wicca and Witchcraft systems the Watchtowers are evocational symbols of spiritual beings known as the Watchers or the Grigori. Each Watchtower is associated with one of the four quarters of north, east, south and west. In some traditions the Watchtowers are associated with the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. They are also each linked to a specific star. The north Watchtower is Fomalhaut, the east is Aldebaran, Regulus marks the south, and Antares is the west
Amazingly, Wikipedia also confirms our findings that the Four Directional Spirits are indeed from the class of Watchers, or as it states “evocational symbols of spiritual beings known as the Watchers.”
The fact that these Four Directional Spirits are indeed Watchers and not Gate Gods, is supported by the Simon Necronomicon itself. On page 47 of the SN it states:
“Thou mayest not call upon NANNA till thou hast passed the Gate of NANNA. Thou mayest not call NEBO until his Gate hast thou passed. Similarly for the rest of the Gates. When thou hast ascended to the limit of the Ladder of Lights, thou wilt have knowledge and power over the Spheres, and wilt be able to summon them thereby in times of need.”
What the Mad Arab is saying in the above quote is very important to our discussion. See, if the Spirits of the Four Directions were indeed the Gate Gods, then how could the candidate for initiation invoke a Gate God if they haven’t even walked the Sphere of that God? Evidently these spirits are not of the class of the Gate Gods, but of the Watchers, which the text does indeed state must be invoked before the Walking.
The attributes of the Four Directional spirits are universal across many systems of magic, and if one has not discovered the meaning of these Four Directions, I would strongly advise that they begin studying the basic tenants of Witchcraft.
First let us look at some comparisons between john Dee’s Enochian Magic and traditional Witchcraft before we proceed into the Necronomicon correspondences..
ENOCHIAN MAGIC andTRADITIONALWITCHCRAFT CORRESPONDENCES
(ENOCHIAN) North= Earth= Fomalhaut =Black
(PAGAN) North=Earth=Black=Winter=Dark Moon=Uriel
(ENOCHIAN) East= Air= Aldebaran=Yellow
(PAGAN) East=Air=Yellow-Spring= Waxing Moon= Raphael
(ENOCHIAN) South= Fire= Regulus= Red
(PAGAN) South=Fire=Red= Summe=Full Moon=Michael
(ENOCHIAN) West= Water=Antares=Blue
(PAGAN) West=Water=Blue=Autumn=Waning Moon=Gabriel
Interestingly, Benjamin Rowe so eloquently stated in his A MODIFIED HEXAGRAM RITUAL FOR ENOCHIAN WORKINGS THE FOLLOWING:
“Dee perceived the magickal circle as a representation in two dimensions of the three-dimensional sphere of the heavens, in much the same way as a horoscope chart.1A horoscope is a representation of the fusion of macrocosm and microcosm at one specific point in time. Since we are attempting to produce a manifestation of the representatives of the macrocosmic forces in the Tablets, this symbolism seems very
appropriate. The four directions in the circle become the four “angles” of the horoscope, with the east being the ascendant, the west the descendant, the south the midheaven and the north the nadir. Because the “angles” of the magickal circle are at right angles to each other, they will always fall into one of the zodiacal quadruplicities, and therefore each angle will always be in a sign whose element is different from the other three. The relative positions of the four elements will always be the same. If we start with Air, then the next angle deosil will always be Water, next after that Fire, and last Earth. The decision to assign the elements to the angles as is done in this ritual stems from several considerations: a) Since this ritual is primarily intended for invoking planetary forces, the elements should be treated according to their “heavenly” positions, as they are in relation to each other in the zodiac, rather than in their traditional mundane directions. b) The element of Earth should be placed in the north because the planet Earth is always, by definition, in the nadir of a horoscope.”
This sheds even a deeper light upon the workings of the Simon Necronomicon. We can clearly see from the chart and the quote above that the Spirits of the Four Direction, in both the Enochian and Pagan Systems, are indeed Archangels. This would mean that the Spirits of the Four Directions relate to the IGIGI, and possibly the Three Great Watchers. It also shows us that indeed the workings of the Simon Necronomicon are closely linked to the Enochian System of magick.
The fact that the Four Directional Spirits are the Three Great watchers and our Personal Watcher should not be too surprising. The Mad Arab gives us quite a bit of information that shows us that indeed this is the case. On page 71 of the Simon Necronomicon, when speaking on the topic of Conjuring the watcher he states:
“And this special Conjuration may be made at any time the Priest feels he is in danger, whether his life or his spirit, and the Three Watchers and the One Watcher will rush to his aid.”
This means that along with the Watcher comes the Three Great Watchers, ANU, ENLIL, and ENKI, in times of need. Earlier in the same section of the Simon Necronomicon on page 70 state the following:
“Wherefore it is wise to conjure It in the Names of the Three Great Watchers Who existed before the Confrontation from whose borne the Watcher and His Race ultimately derive, and those Three are ANU, ENLIL, and Master ENKI of the Magick Waters.”
The idea of the Watchers being described as an Archangel is in sync with the Ancient Greater Mysteries of Chaldea. In The Chaldean Oracles Attributed to Zoroaster, gives us a scheme of the classes of Beings that influence life:
CHALDÆAN SCHEME OF BEINGS.
Representatives of the previous classes guiding our universe.
I. Hyperarchii—Archangels
II. Azonæi—Unzoned gods
III. Zonæi—Planetary Deities.
It should be noted that we have already identified the Watcher as KUTULU in our Mountain of MASSHU Series. We have also identified KUTULU as a reflection of our ‘dead self’ in this same series that can be found to the menu on the right. However, we should also keep in mind that the Mad Arab stated in his Testimony the following words on page 6:
“I have traveled among the stars, and trembled before the Gods. I have, at last, found the formulae by which I passed the Gate ARZIR, and passed into the forbidden realms of the foul IGIGI.”
The Gate of ARZIR is a reference to the Higher Gates that are above ADAR, namely, ENKI, ENLIL and ANU. If this is the case then it is not the the Three Great Watchers that guard the directional Gates themselves, but the class of Watchers that they rule. Before we build upon this a little more let us list the correspondences of each directional gate as they pertain to the Qliphotic workings of the Simon Necronomicon.
Seal of the North Gate
Element: Earth
Color: Black
Deity: TIAMAT//KUTULU
Description of this Gate corresponds to the 1st part of the MAGAN Text.
Season: Winter
Dark Moon
In the INVOCATION OF THE NORH GATE it mentions that the Silver Hunter from the City of UR is being called. Ur was known in ancient times as the principal city in the Land of the Watchers.
Seal of The East Gate
Element= Air
Color= Yellow
Deity= Anu
Season= Spring
Waxing Moon
Description of the East Gate is given in the 2ndpart of the MAGAN Text entitled: Of the Generations of the Ancient Ones.
Interestingly, in an article about NINSHUBUR that also appears in the catalogue of articles on this page, we pointed out that she/he was the spirit of the East Gate. This in no way conflicys with our placement of Anu here. Since it was previously mentioned that NINSHUBUR served as ANU’s Watcher, as well as, ISHTAR. It is evident since the gender change of NINSHUBUR, occurs she is depicted as a male when serving and ANU and a female when serving ISHTAR. Evidently, NINSHUBER signifies a class of spirits.
Another point of note about the East Gate is that it calls for protection against ENDUKUGGA and NINDURKUGGA. These are Underworld deities who are said to parent ENLIL. Thus the class of Watchers that NINSHUBUR is said to represent would indeed work perfectly against their evil rays. Since NINSHUBUR represents the Watcher ans spiritual fetus of the ANU and ISHTAR union. ISHTAR is the grandaughter of ENLIL and ANU is the father of ENLIL Thus the Crown of ANU would represent the Tribe of the EAST, or the Tribe of ANU, Notice what is mentioned by Nicholas de Vere in his book The Dragon Legacy: The Secret History Of An Ancient Bloodline, on page 42:
“These people, coterminously the Aryans or Scythians, who are thought to have developed Tantra in Sumerian, were known as the legendary Tuadha d’Anu (tibe of Anu and by a traditional widely known derication- “people of the stars”) or daouine sidhe (meaning “people of the powers”)..,”
It should also be noted that the stars rise from Earth’s view, east to west.
Seal of The South Gate
Element= Fire
Color= Red/Orange
Deity= ENKI
Season=Summer
Full Moon
Description of South Gate is given symbolicly in the 3rd part pf the MAGAN Text entitled Of the Forgotten Generations of Man.
It should be evident by know that the saud correspondences of the elements, are not Kabbalistic, or refer to the said correlation of the deity, as ENKI is the God of Water, yet he finds his place in the South Gate since fire is a projective force. He is the lifegiver. The full moon is symbolic of ovulation and semen. It should also be noted that the South stands directly in opposition to the North. ( north means place of death) Therefore, ENKI’s placement here work in unison as he is the ressurector of INANNA. It should also be noted that in the INVOCATION of the South Gate, he is mentioned.
Seal of the West Gate
Element= Water
Color= Blue
Deity=ENLIL
Season= Autumn
Waning Moon
Description of the West gate is given alchemically in the 4th section of the MAGAN Text entitled, Of the Sleep of ISHTAR.
The class of Watchers coming from the house of ENLIL are of the element of water, as ENLIL is the storm god and storms were perceived by the Ancient Sumerians as emotions in symbol. Additionally, in Ceremonial systems the West Direction is assigned to Gabriel. ENLIL Was Called DAMMUZI Or GABRIY From Which The Name GABRIEL.
In our next part we will cover how to use these Gates to Walk the gates in the said elements. Also, we will consider how the steps of Walking change when we are initiated,

I’m very interested in information on the watch towers. How does one get into this? Are these good invocations or bad. I guess I’m trying to understand what this is all about because it is so interesting to me. Where can I find information? What happens when you call the four corners? So many questions.
Thank you for your time,
Ruben

Hi, I thought it was interesting when you mentioned above that the Enochian system supposedly has the following attributions:
East= Air=Yellow
South= Fire= Red
West= Water=Blue
Whereas in fact, Edward Kelly’s Enochian visions and his receptions of the Watchtowers actually state:
East=Fire=Red
South=Air=White
West= Water=Green
I wonder if you’ve been influenced by any people who try to change the Enochian attributions to suit those of the Golden Dawn (and all the other orders who’ve copied the G.D.)?
Of course, there’s always been some debate on the accuracy of Elemental directions by many authors over the years.
Thanks! I will look into it further. Uhmm, I formulated much of this observation by Golden dawn from Israel Regardie
