KEYS TO THE ANCIENT ONES PART 8: Initiation into the Secret Society that still Rules Today

Greetings!

I would like to welcome everyone here to the Simon Necronomicon GateWalker’s Page. If this is your first time here, please read some of our previous articles to gain further insight on our current subject.

I am happy that we have covered a lot of information concerning the Rites of the Ancient Ones.  However,  I must say that the importance of these Rites and rituals cannot be fully understood until the Initiate understands the history of the Cult of the Dead.

The Mad Arab speaks about this Cult on various occasions in the Text of the Simon Necronomicon. One example, can be  seen in the beginning of the MAGAN Text:

“The verses here following come from the secret text of some of the priests of a cult which is all that is left of the Old Path that existed before Babylon was built..,”

The Mad Arab on another occasion mentioned a “Cult” that existed before Babylon was built, he is referring to the Sult of the Dead. We can ascertain this from a passage that appears in the URILLA Text”

“Bread of the Cult of the Dead in its Place I eat”

The Mad Arab reveals the identity of this “Cult” in the above passage, being none other than the Cult of the Dead. Although, there is not much information available about the Cult of the Dead, most scholars agree that it is the religion of the Ancient Ones. I must also state that without understanding of the history of the Cult of the Dead, no Initiate can ever gain a true understanding of the Greater Mysteries. In the book Spiritism and the cult of the dead in antiquity by Lewis Bayles Paton, we find the following observation on page 18:

“..,it appears that the cult of the dead is one of the most ancient and most widely-spread forms of human worship….,a number of ancient writers formulated the theory that ancestor-worship was the origin of all human religion.”

Here we see that Paton describes the Cult of the Dead’s spiritual philosophy as being the foundation of all human religion. if this is the case, then we should see aspects of this in human religions that followed this most ancient Cult. Paton continues on page 208 with the following words:

“The rites of mourning among the Semites were similar to those of among other primitive peoples and bear witness to a similar cult of the dead.”

Before we continue on with other examples, Paton explains why the Cult of the Dead was so understood and embraced by ancient people who later came to fear the dead:

“The great gods whom men loved and adored were gods of the upper world and of the living; their sway did not extend into the dark abodes of the dead…,When death came it was a sign that their favor was withdrawn, or thatthey were unable to help against the powers f darkness. The disembodied spirit passed out of their jurisdiction into that of divinities wih whom in life it had established no friendly relations.”

Here we see that it is important for the Initiate to establish a relationship with the forces of darkness.  This we find as being the case with some of the most legendary kings and priests in history. Paton illustrates this further on page 261:

“The dark holy of holies of Solomon’s temple, with its anteroom, in which a lamp was kept burning and bread and incense were offered, was the counterpart of an ancient Canaanite tomb…,Sacrifice is a rite that has meaning only in the cult of the dead. The blood, in which the life of the animal resides, is poured outin order that the shades may drink of it and renew their vigour. Offerings of food and drink are not needed by celestial deities, but are needed by spirits of the dead, and have been offered to them from the earliest times…,and were afterward extended to other divinities..,”

Here we can see a clear example of how the Cult of the Dead, while remaining hidden, was influential in the secret cults of ancient times controlled culture, politics, and kings. Paton continues on page 20:

“We are told of Confucius that “he sacrificed to the spirits as though the spirits were present,” and he consciously enjoined the cult of the dead upon his disciples.”

This is further evidence of how widespread the Cult of the Dead really were. When we identify who the Cult of the Dead really are, we can see what groups were considered the Ancient Ones by the Mad Arab. Paton continues in his introductory notes, and from them we can see some of the bigoted views of Paton’s generation, though in some respects he praises these same “savage people” as being keepers of a most ancient tradition:

“In the Neolithic caves of Palestine, that were inhabited by a pre-Semitic race, offerings of food and drink were deposited with the dead and their bones were used as amulets. Anthropologists are agreed that no savage race exits which does not belive in some sort of immortality and practise some rites in honour of the dead.”

Earlier in Paton’s writing we find what he calls a savage race, would incude Africans, Native Americans, East Indians, and Asian peoples. Yet he also shows how this same Cult of the Dead was influential in Europe. In this online article entitled Death Rite we find the following observation:

“The Christian cult of the dead found found early expression in the catacombs..,”

It is clear from reveiwing the history of the Cult of the Dead that we find this to be the same organization that the Mad Arab describes as existing before babylon was built. it is this same Cult that Simon referred to in his introduction of the SN in a section entitled WORSHIP OF THE ANCIENT ONES IN HISTORY, we read:

“In the West, the conjuration, cultivation, or worship of this Power was strenuously oppossed with the advent of the Solar Monotheistic religions and those who clung to the Old Ways were effectively exstinguished.”

It now makes since  why the Mad Arab said that this Cult were to produce a text called the MAGAN Text. MAGAN sometimes referring to the “place of death.”  It can be estimated that the Cult of the Dead existed before the belief system of the Sumerians. It seems that after the Deluge the Cult’s Power was weakend by the Solar Cults, yet it still remained alive by Initiates who performed the work in secret. it is evident that the Cult existed before sumeria and Babylon because the esthetics of the Cult, althouth pre-historic, were though to be evil by the groups that followed them, namely the Sumerians and Babylonians, which means that they did not understand the cause of these rites. Paton continues on page 211 of his book:

“Unlike China, where ancestors were believed to bless their descendants,…in Babylonia and Assyria the activity of spirits of the dead was entirely maleficent.”

This would establish that the Cult that the Mad Arab mentioned in the beginning of the MAGAN Text must have existed even before Sumeria, since the Cult of the Dead is the oldest of religions. This would also explain why the Babylonians thought wind-spirits were evil, since the wind represented the soul, spirit, or breathe of the deceased person.  Interestingly, they also believed that the spirit still had some connection to the dead body and the physical body was its chief seat of activity. In some of the early Babyloniian incantations we see that these “evil spirits” are described as having no wife, cannot stand or sit, and etc. This being the case we can now understand why PAZUZU, was considered evil, since he was a wind demon. This would also clarify some aspects of Lamashtu being able to act in her own accord or winds that were not formed in heaven. We mentioned earlier that it was Ancient Mesopotamian belief that, although the celestial gods favored man from time to time, they could not do anything about the forces of darkness coming to take a soul is not the womb of death being that the have never established a relationship with these forces. This is what the Mad Arab seems to be talking about in the beginning of the Second Testimony, for although he has descended into the Abyss and has Walked amongst the Spheres, his fate still awaits him:

The Lords of the Wind rush about me and are angered..,”

It is a beautiful  that we have the opportunity to undergo the Rites of the Cult of the Dead, by our workings in the SN and our initiation into the Black Rites that appear in the Urilla Text. In view of our observations, it would seem probable that since the Cult of the Dead existed from pre-historic times, it may shed some light on what civilization is older Egypt or Sumeria since Egypt has a long history and was influenced for centuries by the Cult of the Dead. The Cult of Osiris one example of this. Actually the Mad Arab admits this when he describes these cults in his Second Testimony:

“Beware of  the Cults of Death, and these are the Cult of the Dog, the Cult of the Dragon, and the Cult of the Goat…”

Here the Mad Arab is secretly indicating source that the Initiate of the Black Rites will do well to investigate, to gain a deeper understanding of their work as an Ancient One. We will discuss these groups in our next article

Adepthood is No Mean Task – The Intermediate Mysteries

The passing of the Gates gives the priest both power and wisdom to use it. He becomes able to control the affairs of his life more perfectly than before, and many have been content to merely pass the first three Gates and then sit down and go no further than that, enjoying the benefits that they have found on the preliminary spheres.

We have seen that the Lesser Mysteries of the Inner Planets have much to teach an individual about how to be successful in their mundane lives and to lay secure foundations for the more advanced work they must perform. Indeed, just as the Lesser Mysteries were the basis of the “Outer Orders” of Victorian occultism, we can recognize that they also form the basis of the exoteric and organized practices of Judaism and Christianity. The Protestant Work Ethic in particular, which led to the creation of capitalism, is a product of the lesser mysteries, and the simple lives dictated by such teachings esteemed family, discipline, success in one’s profession, and the ability to win battles successfully as the capstones of life.

But this is Evil, for they are not equipped to deal with the attack from Without that must surely come, and their people will cry unto them for safety, and it will not come forth.

The forces of Universal Chaos that the Ancient Ones represent are natural eventualities that supersede and penetrate “the best laid plans of mice and men”. The profound warning presented in this verse is not fully appreciated by those who imagine that an invasion from the Outside only occurs in a spectacular and fantastic fashion; perhaps in the style depicted in the movie Hellboy. The truth is that the “Ancient Ones” do not need “special effects” to wreak havoc on the world. They break through every day and bring about unspeakable horror through vehicles such as warfare, disease, genocide, rape, and environmental disasters.

During the course of its history, the Roman Church (for Rome and the Christian Church became one force) eliminated all of its open rivals until its absolute dominance over Europe was undisputed. Then came the Mongol invasions and the Plague, called “Scourges of God”, and the church was shown in reality to be impotent to protect Europe from losing a huge proportion of its population. Instead, it convened a horrible inquisition and proclaimed that the end was at hand. The end was at hand, but only of the world as the church envisioned. The world itself went on, and the shocking failure of the church to live up to its word opened the way for both the Protestant Reformation and the Scientific Revolution.

Therefore, set thy face towards the ultimate goal and strive ever onward to the furthest reaches of the stars, though it mean thine own death; for such a death is as a sacrifice to the Gods, and pleasing, that they will not forget their people.

Although both the quality and quantity of life may be enriched, death is a natural eventuality that awaits us all and which we all must make peace with. The goal of a Gatewalker is to conduct one’s life in such a way that regrets and unfinished karmic business will not follow one’s spirit after death, and that with both life and death service to the world and fulfillment of one’s destiny and true will is accomplished. Every life lived in such a way empowers all of the lives surrounding it. It revitalizes the world through restablishing “the Covenant” of Durankia – the Bond of Heaven and Earth.

The Arbatel of Magic calls the next set of Mysteries “Mean”, in the older sense of the word, denoting that which is common or average, rather than cruel. That cruelty came to be associated with the average person is a sad commentary on the history of our species. The degrees of these Intermediate Mysteries are the Adept degrees – Minor, Major, and Exempt respectively, corresponding to the spheres of the Sun, Mars, and Jupiter – a contraction of Jove Pater.

Just like the Lesser Secrets, “The Mean Secrets are likewise seven in number:

1. The first is, the transmutation of Metals, which is vulgarly called Alchemy; which certainly is given to very few, and not but of special grace.

This branch of knowledge included both the arts of ancient Al Khem – the Black Art of the Black Land of Aegypt – as well as the knowledge of modern chemistry. It includes both the means to create alloys and convincing substitutes as well as real and authentic alchemical transmutations, which are accomplished not merely with natural or even artificial means, but with the power of the human spirit and the cooperation of the spirits of the elements.

2. The second is, the curing of diseases with Metals, either by the magnetic virtues of precious stones, or by the use of the Philosophers stone, and the like.

The practice of homeopathy makes use of minute amounts of minerals as well as essences and tinctures of plants and animals. Although western medicine does make use of metals and other minerals in its therapies, the allopathic approach generally overkills with the quantity of the substance, and limits itself to only certain ones which are often used for their reactivity. The spirits of the Necronomicon can help those with interest in this field to rediscover many safe and effective treatments that utilize the minerals surrounding us.

3. The third is, to be able to perform Astronomical and Mathematical miracles, such as are Hydraulic-engines, to administer business by the influence of Heaven, and things which are of the like sort.

All manner of modern technology falls into this category, but the “administration of business by the influence of Heaven” is an interesting corrolary. Its suggests coordination with astrological cycles that are seen as of the same importance and nature of the physical forces of gravity and other cosmic polarities.

4. The fourth is, to perform the works of natural Magick, of what sort soever they be.

“Natural Magic” was the original name of Science, as evidence in John Baptiste’s work on the subject. This field was originally an admixture of folk traditions and experiments with natural forces such as magnetism and static electricity that contained both magical effects and what we would now class as “natural effects”, although magic in itself is a perfectly natural mechanism in the domain of intelligent beings. The first book of Agrippa’s Occult Philosophy focuses on this area, which is also the domain of modern witchcraft and sorcery – medicinal and magical applications of natural substances such as salts, herbs, candle wax, and animal curios.

5. The fifth is, to know all Physical secrets.

The mastery of divination in its many forms allows one to obtain whatever kind of information is required or desired whenever necessary. This may take the form of simple dowsing for water, or the evocation of spirits for information, as outlined in the Book of Calling.

6. The sixth is, to know the foundation of all Arts which are exercised with the hands and offices of the body.

This area would include both martial arts as well as Hatha Yoga and any other discipline in which the physical body becomes the medium of miracles, including gymnastics and other athletic sports.

7. The seventh is, to know the foundation of all Arts which are exercised by the angelical nature of man.

The “angelical nature of man” alludes to several functions of our spirits and minds, including the formation and travel of the astral body, psychic ability, psionics, lucid dreaming, and the prophetic arts. Remember that “angelos” is a translation of the Hebrew “malach” – a messenger being who has surrendered his claims on godhood to the service of a Great God, such as Marduk, Enlil, or the Yahweh. Nebo and Hermes, possibly the same god, were both “swift of winged foot” and the examplars of these abilites and responsabilities, communicating amongst the agents of Heaven and Earth and carrying out the will of the divine council formed therewith.

We can see from this list though that while such abilities and capacities may once have been common amongst magicians and sorcerers in times past, they are actually more rare today in a magical culture that is trying to reinvent the wheel and still wonders about the very reality of spirits and “magical” powers.

Initiates of the Mean Mysteries, in my experience, are much more independant in thought and practice than their younger brothers and sisters on the path. They are beginning to make a name for themselves through personal explanations of a spiritual field of their choosing. With the opening of the Shammash gate, these practitioners begin to work from their hearts and pursue that which is personally relevant and interesting to them, which will depend upon their nature, experience, the karma of past lives, and their current goals and disposition. They are the more educated and erudite authors of occult literature, as opposed to the “witchcrap” authors who rehash the same information again and again and tend to believe they’re the first to rediscover what is essential Spirituality 101. You’ll find these individuals crafting their own ritual supplies, engaging in planned long-term developmental programs, lecturing at conventions and lodge meetings, and sometimes even selling wares and services to those willing to buy. They network extensively with both spirits and humans and enjoy sharing and comparing experiences one on one, over the phone, internet, and in person. Generally there is a lot more honesty with these practitioners and many have gotten burned in spiritual organizations of one flavor or another. Minor Adepts “shine” with the brightness of the Sun and often have a cheerful nature and good sense of humor to buoy them in their spiritual adventures. As Shammash is the Master Exorcist, they gain the power to start to seriously overcome both their own demons and the demons that trouble their fellows.

Major adepts have a seriousness about them that comes from learning to grapple head on with both their fears and their weaknesses. They study the nature of evil, pain, and suffering, and learn to push themselves beyond their old comfort zones to achieve new heights and levels of proficiency in anything they put their minds and bodies to. Nergal teaches us to fight when we must but also know and respect our enemy for who they are and what they stand for – nothing mroe, nothing less. Many if not most of the occultists I have met have trained in at least one martial art for at least a year, and this is an excellent accompaniment to spiritual study that prevents one from becoming too cerebral and helps an initiate to understand, as one sister of mine put it, “the Teachings in Movement and Motion”. Although fear may still come, great bravery is acquired in this stage which helps the initiate to survive and overcome whatever obstacles arise in his or her path.

The term Adeptus Exemptus can be understood in two ways. The first is that these initiates are exemplary examples for their compatriots to follow. They have begun to truly realize their spiritual nobility – the “blue blood” of royalty. This sphere and grade teach what is called Righteous Kingship – how to lead and command both spirits and men, and to organize and manifest a divine kingdom on Earth. The second understanding of Exemptus is that these adepts become exempt from the formal and informal laws and dogmas to which their younger siblings are bound, consciously or unconsciously. These initiates learn to live justly and rightly in a more personal sense, in which the law is “written on their hearts” and understood and executed without narrowness or ritual specifics. This is the beginning of the birth of creativity, in that a written code can be transcended in favor of an intuitive leap. This comes with an understaning of the origin, nature, and spirit of the law, so that lip-service and repeitive ritual become replaced by very meaningful and powerful rites of a personal nature, of which “even the Elder Gods are awed thereby”.

A GateWalker’s Perspective on Today’s Economic Crisis

I thought I would make a brief comment on a passage that is often misunderstood in the Simon Necronomicon. This passage is found in the MAGAN Text:

 

“The Gate if IAK SAKKAK may be flung wide
By which the Ancient Ones
Seek their Vengeance
Upon the face of the Earth
Against the Offspring of MARDUK.
For what is new
Came from that which is old
And what is old
Shall replace that which is new
And once again the Ancient Ones
Shall rule upon the face of the Earth!
And this is too the Covenant!’

 

The Prophesy of the Ancient Ones return is gradually coming into being. We are beginning to see a shift in the economy or the long foretold war of Armageddon, which is nothing more than the conflict that we see between the corporate infrastructure versus the government.

 

The government has been held accountable for the wild uncontrollable corporate beast. It is the corporations, not the government that encourages the indulgence of deadly vices. We are entertained by corporation with lust, murder, and all sorts of illicit acts. If there wasn’t any governmental regulations things might even be worst.

The governments of the world have long held the “mystical traditions” through symbolism, and custom. Yet corporations have been able to seduce government through large donations, which has created a state of chaos and confusion.. Now we see in the “news” or media circus the exposure of the illegal acts in the corporate world. This is evidence that the government is taking back its authority and may even nationalize the banking system here in the United States and in other neighboring countries.

 

“Remember that the Essences of the Ancient Ones are in all things, but that the Essences of the Elder Gods are in all things that live, and this will prove of value to thee when the time comes.”

Greetings!

 

I would like to extend a warm salutation to all of our readers who have supported the Necronomicon GateWalker’s Information Page during this past year. I would like to extend a great salutation to The Order of Necronomicon, as well as, Dan Harms, John Wisdom Gonce III, and Dan Clore, for their participation in one of the greatest occult debates in recent history. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Denny Sergeant for his interview, along with Adept Edumpanna. I would also like to send a warm salutation to David Stolowitz, who has been a frequent commenter on the Page. I would like to send a big salutation to my family, my lovely soul mate, and our children, and to all who I have mentored and to my many mentors. I appreciate all who have faithfully walked and opposed the Necronomicon Path, as it has helped everyone in the work of evolving and sharpening the craft of Necronomics. I must also state the according to the Necronomicon Tradition, our New Year starts during the spring equinox, not January first. However, it is a great time for getting together with family and friends, so be good and be safe.

WARLOCK ASYLUM ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA

I would like to take a little time away from our usual discussions about our culture of necromancy to talk about the Presidential Campaign of 2008. We here at the Simon Necronomicon GateWalker’s Page and Keepers of the Ancient Chaldean Tradition support Barack Obama in his endeavors to be the next President of the Untied States of America.  After a careful review of  both Presidential Candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama, we hold the opinion that it is in best interests to support Senator Barack Obama to give America the best future possible for the following reasons:

 

1)     Senator John McCain’s has often stated that Barack Obama is not qualified to be the next President of the United States due to his lack of experience. We have found that these statements are not substantial and may show some bigotry on the part of John McCain.  American voters need to ask themselves; how far does experience play into the capability of fulfilling your responsibilities as a politician?  If we are going to question a political candidate based on their level of experience, then why didn’t we question Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger? According to Senator John McCain standards, Governor Schwarzenegger is not qualified to be Governor of the State of California. Mayor Michael Bloomberg held no prior experience as an elected political official before being elected in 2001 as Mayor of New York City. I would like to remind our readers that Mayor Michael Bloomberg was elected during the greatest crisis that New York City has ever faced, the 9/11 tragedy. He was frequently mentioned as a possible independent candidate for the 2008 presidential election and fueled that speculation when he left the Republican Party in June 2007. Why didn’t the American public question Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s level of experience back in 2001? Ross Perot ran for President in 1992 and 1996 and had no prior experience as an elected political official, yet his lack of experience in the arena of politics never came into question. The ideology that a politician is capable of securing America’s future based on how long they have been involved in the political arena is somewhat idealistic, but not always valid. Our current President, George W. Bush, has quite a bit of political experience and the Bush name is well known in the field of politics and it still has a great field of influence. Yet both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama have publicly expressed disdain for the Bush Administration, despite the experience that President George W. Bush has in the field of politics. Senator John McCain’s critique of Senator Barack Obama as not being qualified for the Executive Office is an appeal to those who have become complacent with the current political state of affairs and for those who are afraid of real fundamental change. Our choice of who should be the next President of the United States should be based on the candidate’s agenda and not on who has the most experience as an elected political official.

 

2)     Senator John McCain’s Economic Plan

 

Some individuals have aligned themselves with Senator John McCain due to his promise not to raise taxes. This has made me wonder if America has a good memory. Maybe this next statement might give you a clue as to what I am talking about.  

 

“Read my lips: no new taxes” is a now-famous phrase spoken by former American president and candidate George H. W. Bush at the 1988 Republican National Convention as he accepted the nomination on August 18. Written by speechwriter Peggy Noonan, the line was one of the most prominent soundbites from the speech. The pledge not to tax the American people further had been a consistent part of Bush’s 1988 election platform, but its prominent inclusion in his speech cemented it in the public consciousness. The impact of the election promise was considerable, and many believe it helped Bush win the 1988 presidential election.

Once he became president, however, Bush raised taxes as a way to reduce the national budget deficit. Bush refused many times but was making no progress with a Senate and House that was controlled by Democrats.

Is Senator John McCain feeding us the same broken promise twenty years later? It seems so. How can Senator John McCain rescue America’s failing economy and still engineer a $10 Billion dollar-a-month war? Maybe all his experience as a veteran might have slighted his experience in the arena of economics. Despite the fact that America’s economy is hurting badly, Senator John McCain has not put together a cohesive economical package to date. What Senator John McCain has done is to put a report together that is an alternative to Barack Obama’s plan.  This ‘wait and see what Obama  does, then get a bunch of economists together to improvise on Obama’s plan,’  indicates Senator John McCain’s lack of leadership in the arena of economics.

 

3)     John McCain’s chooses Sarah Palin as Vice Presidential Candidate

 

This is probably the worst display of judgment that I have seen in the history of politics, and it also shows us that despite all the political experience that John McCain has boasted about, he is very capable of making some big mistakes. I am sure that Senator McCain was trying to win more votes by playing off of the disappointment that some people faced when Senator Obama did not choose Hillary Clinton as a running mate. While this choice may have gave him a few percentage points in the polls, now it is hurting him quite a bit today. Senator John McCain is in his early seventies and whoever wins the Presidential Election has quite a bit of work ahead of them. Stress is the number one bringer of disease and fatality. God forbid something was to happen to Senator John McCain, if elected President, but does Sarah Palin have what it takes to be Commander and Chief of the United States? And if she does, then why didn’t she run for the Republican Nomination like Hillary Clinton did? You mean to tell me that out of the whole Republican Party Sarah Palin is most qualified Vice Presidential Candidate?

 

First, I must state that even when Hillary Clinton was running for the Democratic Nomination the media was making her out to be the most qualified woman in the political arena, and this is far from the truth. Actually, the most qualified woman to run for the office of President, is often over-looked, and would have secured Senator John McCain’s office for Presidency if he had chosen her. Her name is Condoleezza Rice!

 

Why didn’t John McCain choose Condoleezza Rice as his running mate? Not only would he have captured some of the Hillary Clinton supporters. But he would have also increased his popularity amongst the minority community. Miss Condoleezza Rice has been President George W. Bush’s backbone for the past eight years. She has the strength of a leader and the political experience that would make Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton look like girl-scout saleswomen. Bu then again this is type of decisions that a man with so much political experience and no 0n-the-job training makes?!!! How can Senator John McCain be an effective leader while he is making ineffective decisions during his campaign? Yet John McCain continues to promote the idea that Barack Obama has an agenda that is Socialist and that he associates himself with terrorists, has America forgotten about the Keating Five? I will let Wikipedia remind you:

 

“The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB). The FHLBB subsequently backed off taking action against Lincoln.

Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed in 1989, at a cost of over $3 billion to the federal government. Some 23,000 Lincoln bondholders were defrauded and many elderly investors lost their life savings. The substantial political contributions that Keating had made to each of the senators, totalling $1.3 million, attracted considerable public and media attention. After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, and Donald Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation of Lincoln Savings, with Cranston receiving a formal reprimand. Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised “poor judgment”.

All five of the senators involved served out their terms. Only Glenn and McCain ran for re-election, and they both succeeded.”
